The Civil War in Adairsville

In 1864 the Civil War visited Adairsville...with a vengeance! The northern army came out of Chattanooga, marching for Atlanta. The southern army was trying desperately to stop them. Being right in the middle, Adairsville was in the direct line of fire. Many of the trenches used during that campaign are still to be found in this area, along with tools, weapons, and personal items lost by the soldiers of both sides. This case contains many such items as well as others which were brought back from the war by the Bowdoin family.

The Railroad was a family affair.

Railroad display

Many folks from the Adairsville area worked for the railroad in earlier days when the trains stopped here. This is the story of two of those, father and son, who both retired from our railroad. This exhibit displays many items that they used in their jobs as conductors.

Early life in Adairsville

Big changes came to the citizens of Adairsville in 1925. In order to install thirteen modern electric street lights on the Square, electricity was brought in from Plainville. In no time homes in town began to be illuminated with electric light, and many of the old ways of doing things were discarded along with the tools they used. This is a "living" exhibit. It is constantly growing as generous citizens bring items to add to the story of life before electricity. Come in often and watch it grow.

Tools and Plows

Plowing through history

As late as the mid-twentieth century, this area was largely agricultural. Many farmers made their crops with the help of mule, horse, or oxen. Power tools were not as prevelant as in today's hurried world. Come in and visit a time when "more power!!" meant "bigger mule", "more oxen", "neighbor helping neighbor".

And now for you edification, introducing.......
